Mamdani Offers Few Details on 12-Block Manhattan Encampment as 48 Complaints Mount

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said only that City Hall would “look into the details” of a homeless encampment stretching from 34th to 46th streets on Manhattan’s West Side.
Under city rules, he said, encampments can be cleared only after the Department of Homeless Services conducts daily outreach for seven days following an initial notice.
The camp near the Intrepid Museum has grown for weeks, according to workers who described tents, furniture, used needles, suspected stolen goods, open drug use and prostitution.
City records show 48 homelessness-related 311 complaints along that stretch this year, including 30 last month alone, as the area sits near a major tourist site ahead of World Cup visitors.
