U.S. small caps have surged far more than large caps this year, with the Russell 2000 up roughly 22% through late June, so VTI does capture that broadening U.S. leadership. The missed opportunity is international exposure. Non-U.S. markets, especially developed and emerging large caps, have outperformed many U.S. large-cap benchmarks in 2026. Funds tracking international stocks have posted stronger year-to-date gains than major U.S. large-cap funds, helped by lower valuations, a weaker dollar, and stronger earnings momentum abroad. VTI, by design, gets none of that. That said, VTI remains a strong core holding. Its expense ratio is just 0.03%, it is highly diversified across about 3,500 U.S. companies, and its long-term returns remain competitive. The bigger issue is that it is still market-cap weighted, so mega-cap U.S. technology stocks continue to dominate performance even though the fund includes smaller companies. For investors who want a simple U.S. core, VTI still makes sense in 2026. For investors worried about concentration risk or wanting to participate in the current international rebound, pairing VTI with an international fund such as VXUS is the more complete approach.
