That does not make Emerson the better pick today; it makes him the more plausible superstar bet. High school hitters carry more developmental risk, and Cholowsky is still the safer projection to become a high-end major leaguer quickly. But if the question is who has the best chance to emerge as the defining talent of this draft, the evidence points strongly to Emerson. Tampa Bay did not just take a prep shortstop at No. 2 — it may have taken the class’s highest-upside player.
