Summary
6-year-old Calli Toler died after Jaime Santiago Corona allegedly ran a stop sign near Vanceboro, North Carolina, while driving on a revoked license, according to local authorities and Rep. Don Davis.
DHS said Corona, a Mexican national, had been deported in 2019, 2023 and 2024, then re-entered the U.S. a fourth time; officials also cited prior DUI charges.
Pitt County authorities, who have custody of Corona, said they plan to cooperate with ICE as the crash draws national attention to immigration enforcement far from the southern border.
North Carolina Republican candidate Laurie Buckhout has seized on the case in the 25-county 1st District, while Davis said he backs enforcing federal immigration law and pointed to his support for the Laken Riley Act.
The death has injected border security into a race usually dominated by poverty, jobs and local economic issues in one of the nation’s poorest congressional districts.
