Square Enix Releases Final Fantasy Tactics 1.5.1, Restoring Buried Items in New Game+

Q: Does the remaster's ongoing support signal that a sequel to the beloved strategy RPG is finally on the horizon?

Not yet. The continued patching of *Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles* is a strong sign that Square Enix sees value in the brand, but it is not evidence that a sequel has been greenlit. What the updates do show is sustained commercial and creative support. Version 1.5.1 follows last month’s much larger 1.5.0 patch, which added New Game+, Zodiac Compatibility, and several quality-of-life features. That level of post-launch work is notable for a remaster, especially one rebuilt without the original master source data. Yasumi Matsuno has also said New Game+ was originally postponed for budget reasons and only became possible because of the remaster’s success. That success matters. The remaster reportedly sold well, earned strong reviews, and won Best Sim/Strategy Game at The Game Awards 2025. Director Kazutoyo Maehiro has said a direct sequel “could happen” if the game proved successful enough, and prominent Square Enix figures such as Naoki Yoshida have publicly said it is “about time” for a new *Final Fantasy Tactics*. Composer Hitoshi Sakimoto has also expressed interest in returning to Ivalice. Even so, there is still no official sequel announcement, no confirmed project in production, and no mention of a new *Tactics* game in Square Enix’s public lineup. Matsuno is working on an unannounced project, but there is no confirmation it is related. So the remaster’s ongoing support is best read as encouraging momentum, not proof that a sequel is imminent.

Version 1.5.1 is now live for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on Switch 2 and Switch, making all buried items discoverable again in New Game+.
The change applies only to New Game+ save data started after the 1.5.1 update, tying the patch directly to the mode added in last month’s larger overhaul.
Square Enix also made minor Traditional Chinese text edits and fixed other small issues, signaling this is a cleanup update rather than a major content drop.
Last month’s update introduced New Game+, Zodiac Compatibility and additional options, with 1.5.1 refining that feature set rather than expanding the game more broadly.
