Q: As the AI boom devours memory chips, must budget phones now sacrifice performance just to survive?

Yes. For many budget and lower mid-range phones, the AI boom is no longer a distant supply-chain story; it is already forcing real performance tradeoffs. The pressure point is memory. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron control more than 95% of DRAM, and they are shifting capacity toward higher-margin AI memory such as HBM. As a result, mobile DRAM prices have jumped about 50% and NAND more than 90% in early 2026, with analysts expecting tight supply into 2027 or 2028. For cheaper phones, memory has swollen from roughly 10-15% of the bill of materials to around 40% or more, making old pricing models hard to sustain. Nothing’s Phone (4b) is a clear example of how brands are adapting. To keep the price down, it uses LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage instead of the faster LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 in the Phone (4a), alongside a lower-tier Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 rather than a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4. Nothing says these are cost decisions, not technical limits. The result is weaker benchmark performance and slower sustained heavy workloads, even if day-to-day use remains acceptable thanks to software tuning and cooling. That does not mean every budget phone must become bad. Brands can offset weaker components with cleaner software, larger batteries, longer support and better thermal design. But the broader market trend is clear: if memory stays expensive, manufacturers must either raise prices, cut memory and storage speed, downgrade other parts, or exit the lowest-price tiers altogether.
