Four solar hybrid mini-grid projects have broken ground in Rivers State, with the federal government targeting electricity access for 13,492 households, businesses and public institutions.
The 11.9MW projects—implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency under the World Bank-backed DARES programme—will serve Bolo/Wakama, Gokana/Khana, Ogu/ChukuAma and Onne.
REA chief Abba Aliyu said the mini-grids are meant to deliver clean, affordable power while supporting businesses, healthcare, education, jobs and local livelihoods in underserved communities.
Aliyu said REA has already completed 16 renewable projects in Rivers State, adding more than 11.5MW for over 14,300 households and businesses, while a separate 10.5MW University of Port Harcourt solar hybrid plant awaits commissioning.
State officials and local leaders cast the rollout as part of broader efforts to ease Nigeria’s power shortages and use more reliable electricity to drive industrialisation and economic growth.
