Daniel Vasey Arrested After Trying to Kidnap 7-Year-Old at Portland Park

Portland police arrested 31-year-old Daniel Vasey after they said he grabbed a 7-year-old girl at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and tried to pull her away from her mother Saturday evening.
A 12-minute gap separated the first calls about a naked man running through the park and a second report that he had seized the child; officers then found Vasey swimming in the Willamette River.
The struggle lifted the girl off the ground as her mother held her other arm, and her father and bystanders punched, slapped, pulled and pepper-sprayed Vasey until he let go.
The girl, an out-of-state tourist visiting Portland with her family, was treated at the scene for scratches and was not taken to a hospital.
Vasey was booked on first- and second-degree attempted kidnapping, custodial interference, assault and harassment charges after police said no officers were initially available.
