Friday’s injury-replacement invite from MLB was too late for Zack Wheeler, who said he refused because he was “not gonna be the fifth option.”
The Phillies ace said he felt “disrespected” after missing the initial National League roster and Tuesday’s first wave of replacements, adding that his issue was with the selection process, not the game.
Wheeler, 36, has built a strong case despite missing the first month after thoracic outlet surgery: 9-1 with a 2.28 ERA, 98 strikeouts in 87 innings, a 0.91 WHIP and 4.3 WAR.
Tuesday’s 14-strikeout outing against Cincinnati intensified the debate over his omission, and Wheeler said the performance should serve as a “reminder.”
The All-Star Game is Tuesday at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park, where six Phillies are set to appear even as Wheeler starts Sunday’s final pre-break game against Detroit’s Tarik Skubal.
