Summary
Washington protesters gathered Friday outside Sweden’s embassy to press for the return of Sara and Tiana Samson, who have been separated from their parents since December 2022.
Swedish social services removed the girls after Sara, then 11, made and later retracted an abuse claim; prosecutors found no evidence, but authorities still cited the family’s church attendance and home rules as signs of “religious extremism.”
Daniel Samson said the family has now lost 14 times in Swedish courts, including a final appeal in March after the European Court of Human Rights declared the case inadmissible.
Romanian Sen. Titus Corlatean, who spoke at the rally, said Romania’s Senate unanimously demanded the girls’ return in June and accused Sweden of holding Romanian citizens in violation of diplomatic norms and international law.
The case has widened beyond Washington, with parallel rallies planned in Brisbane, Stockholm, London and Copenhagen, while Sweden says it cannot comment on individual cases or intervene.
