Summary
10 rabid animals were confirmed in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Orange counties during Virginia’s first quarter of 2026, including a cat, a bat, three raccoons and five skunks.
No human exposures were reported, though the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District said rabies is commonly found in Virginia wildlife, especially raccoons, skunks and bats.
Fauquier had the most cases with four, followed by Culpeper and Orange with two each and Madison with one.
Statewide, 117 animals tested positive for rabies in the first quarter, and health officials urged residents to avoid wild animals, vaccinate pets and report strange behavior.
