That anxiety comes as data center development shifts outward: nearly 90% of existing sites are urban, but 67% of planned facilities are in rural communities and 39% in counties without a current data center.
By 2030, researchers said data center energy demand is projected to more than double in Illinois and triple in Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, intensifying pressure on rates, water and farmland.
