Summary
$7,000 from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and a donation from Charles Barkley have added fresh star power to Republican Jay Feely’s campaign in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.
FEC records show Goodell gave two $3,500 checks last June—one for the primary and one for the general election—while Feely says support from sports figures reflects relationships that cross political differences.
Feely, a former NFL kicker and CBS broadcaster, is running to succeed outgoing Rep. Andy Biggs and has also drawn money from Robert Kraft, Jim Nantz, Jim Harbaugh and the Cardinals’ Bidwill family.
Trump endorsed Feely earlier this year, and the race carries added weight for Republicans trying to defend their narrow House majority; Feely reported $740,000 raised in the first quarter and about $1.25 million on hand in late March.
Arizona voters head to the polls on July 21, with Feely facing a competitive GOP primary against state lawmaker Joseph Chaplik and tech executive John Trobough.
