That playmaking, combined with functional shooting, is why the Mavericks exercised his $2.2 million option and gave him a new two-year deal. The issue is not effort or feel. It is size. At 5-foot-11, Nembhard faces a structural defensive problem that does not disappear with experience. Bigger guards and wing-heavy lineups can target him, and Dallas has already shown caution by sitting him in some matchups where his size was harder to protect. Against stronger, longer opponents, coaches can struggle to hide a small guard over a full game. That does not mean he cannot survive. It means his survival depends on context. If he keeps the offense clean, hits enough threes, competes at the point of attack, and plays within lineups that have length and defensive support around him, he can stick as a third guard and spot rotation player. But becoming a dependable 15-minute contributor on a winning team will require him to prove that opponents cannot relentlessly hunt him. His passing gives him a real NBA floor; his defense will determine his ceiling.
