Summary
15,338 zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles were registered in the US in Q1 2026, just 4.3% of 353,173 total MHDV registrations and down 54.8% from a year earlier.
15,006 medium-duty trucks and vans accounted for nearly all zero-emission volume, but that segment fell 44.1% from Q4 and 55% year on year, cutting penetration to 5.0% from more than 10% a year earlier.
132 heavy-duty trucks were registered as zero-emission, down 59.5% year on year, while buses slipped to 200, down 16%; HDT penetration held at just 0.3% and buses at 4.9%.
California led zero-emission MDT and bus registrations, while Indiana led HDTs; ACT states generally posted higher penetration rates than non-ACT states even when they logged fewer vehicles.
The report also broadened coverage to include Class 2b-3 vehicles, a change that lifted total registration counts and made swings in the large pickup-and-van segment more influential.
