Probably not in the straightforward sense. Based on Frank Herbert’s *Dune Messiah*, which *Dune: Part Three* adapts, Paul Atreides’ collapse is driven mainly by a broad conspiracy against him, the catastrophic legacy of his holy war, and his own prescient trap—not by Chani betraying him. The strongest evidence points to Paul being blinded by a Stone Burner attack organized by rival factions including the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild and the Tleilaxu. In the novel, that injury does not immediately destroy him; he continues to rule through prescient vision. His final withdrawal comes later, after Chani’s death in childbirth, when his grip on the future breaks and he chooses the Fremen path of walking into the desert. What makes the film less certain is Denis Villeneuve’s apparent expansion of Chani’s role. The trailer suggests a deeper rupture between Paul and Chani, and possibly even her involvement in forces opposing him. That would be a major departure from the book, where Chani does not betray Paul and remains central to his personal life until her death. So the most defensible reading is that Chani may become a powerful emotional and political challenge to Paul in the film, and perhaps a catalyst in his unraveling. But the available story evidence still suggests Paul’s “downfall” stems more from imperial backlash, conspiracy and the consequences of his own rule than from any single betrayal by Chani.
