Summary
More than 40 Hong Kong flights to Taiwan, mainland China and Japan were cancelled and 10 delayed to Sunday, with most disruptions hitting Friday and Saturday schedules.
Bavi drove the cancellations as it moved toward seas east of Taiwan; the Hong Kong Observatory said sustained winds near its center were 195 km/h at 8 a.m. Thursday and could reach 205 km/h by Friday morning.
Cathay Pacific, HK Express and Hong Kong Airlines said affected passengers can change tickets without fees, covering routes including Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Zhoushan, Okinawa and Ishigaki.
The storm is then expected to approach eastern China's coast, pointing to possible wider travel disruption beyond the current Hong Kong departures.
