Q: With modern cards secure, are RFID-blocking wallets just selling a solution to a non-existent problem?

Mostly yes for payment cards, but not for everything. For modern contactless bank cards, RFID-blocking wallets often solve a risk that security experts consider minimal. EMV cards issued in recent years do not simply broadcast full card details. They generate a unique, one-time cryptogram for each transaction, and typically do not expose the PIN, CVV, or enough reusable data for easy fraud. Industry groups including UK Finance have described card skimming by RFID as a non-credible or very limited threat compared with far more common risks such as theft, phishing, malware, and social engineering. That means many RFID-blocking wallets are marketed on fear that does not match the main real-world fraud patterns. For most consumers, an ordinary wallet is usually fine if the concern is only contactless card theft. But RFID blocking is not pointless. It can be useful for ePassports, which store personal data on an RFID chip, and for keyless car fobs, which are vulnerable to relay attacks. In those cases, a Faraday-style shield can add meaningful protection, though it is not perfect. That matters for travel products like passport holders, including some AirTag-compatible models that combine tracking with RFID shielding. So the practical answer is this: if you are buying a wallet mainly to protect modern payment cards, RFID blocking is often more reassurance than necessity. If you want to protect a passport or a car key fob, it is a more credible security feature.
