Summary
An estimated 8-foot great white was filmed underwater off Block Island, in what the Atlantic Shark Institute said may be Rhode Island’s first recorded white shark footage.
The shark was feeding on a drifting 40-foot humpback whale carcass that drew researchers into a 50-square-mile, hours-long search several miles south-southeast of the island.
Jon Dodd of the institute captured the footage while Mystic Aquarium’s Sarah Callan collected whale samples during the joint research mission.
Days later, the carcass washed up on Crescent Beach covered with numerous shark bites, ending the episode that researchers said showed how dead whales can suddenly attract rare white shark sightings.
