Summary
Thirty-three people were initially trapped in a landslide in China's western Gansu province, with 17 rescued and at least 16 still buried, state broadcaster CCTV said.
Xi Jinping ordered an all-out rescue effort as authorities worked in the mountainous area, while the cause of the landslide was still unclear.
Deadly weather has already battered other parts of China: thunderstorms in Hubei killed at least eight people, left one missing and injured 275 after winds reached 149 kph.
Forecasters warned that up to 260 mm of rain could hit Guangxi, Jiangsu and Shandong in the next 24 hours, raising further landslide risks for regions home to about 200 million people.
China is also tracking Super Typhoon Bavi, which was moving across the Pacific toward Taiwan with winds of up to 290 kph after passing Guam and nearby islands.
