Garrett is 30, expensive, and his timeline did not match a team that may not be ready to contend until 2028. The return was substantial: Jared Verse, already a Defensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl-caliber edge rusher, plus a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2029 third-rounder. That gives Cleveland a younger cornerstone, cost control, and draft capital that could help it move for a quarterback in the 2027 draft. The trade does not make the Browns better now, and Verse is not Garrett. But it gives them a clearer rebuild path, more financial flexibility, and assets aligned with their next competitive window. So they traded away a piece of their identity, but they likely did it to give themselves a realistic chance at building a better future.
