Four people — one adult and three juveniles — were arrested after multiple officers were assaulted during a chaotic July 4 response in North Charleston’s Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood.
At about 8:30 p.m., officers answering reports of fireworks aimed at passing vehicles learned partygoers were also firing guns; after police ordered the permitted block party to end, fights and more gunfire broke out.
Viral video shows a female officer pulled to the ground while several people rushed in, with one person punching her repeatedly and another appearing to strike her with an object before another officer intervened.
Two female officers suffered minor injuries, no civilians reported injuries, and police recovered four handguns and a makeshift spear while investigating whether the weapons were used or fired.
North Charleston police said charges are still being determined, more arrests are possible, and investigators are separately examining the shootings and other criminal activity tied to the incident.
