Two Tennessee National Guard members shot and killed 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson around 4 a.m. Sunday in downtown Memphis after pursuing him on foot while responding with police to reports of gunfire.
Memphis police said the soldiers opened fire when Johnson turned toward them with a gun; no officers were injured, and Guard medics tried first aid before he died at the scene.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified Johnson and is reviewing the shooting, while family members said authorities told them he was shot twice in the chest and questioned why lethal force was used.
The shooting involved troops assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force, a Trump-backed federal operation that has patrolled the city since October despite Mayor Paul Young's objections.
TBI data links the task force to at least four officer-involved shootings, while the U.S. Marshals Service said in June it had produced more than 10,000 arrests.
