Participants were told to find a medallion and scan the QR code on it. That code could send users to a spoofed website built to harvest personal or financial information, or trigger malware downloads onto their phones. The same tactic also fit other holiday-event scams, including bogus parking-payment QR codes placed around Fourth of July gatherings. In those cases, the patriotic setting created trust and urgency, making people more likely to scan without checking whether the link was genuine. Consumer protection guidance was straightforward: verify that any contest, payment request, or event promotion is tied to an official organizer; inspect the web address before entering information; avoid QR codes sent unexpectedly by text or email or posted in suspicious places; and keep devices protected with updated software, strong passwords, and multi-factor authentication. In short, the QR code itself was the delivery mechanism. The patriotic theme was the lure.
