Summary
Detective Robert Karroll was shot in the back of his bulletproof vest during a 4:14 a.m. encounter in Crown Heights and is expected to fully recover after treatment at Kings County Hospital.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said an 18-year-old approached an unmarked police vehicle with a gun and opened fire as officers got out to disarm him.
Three officers returned fire without hitting the suspect, and the vehicle was left with bullet holes in both windshields and the passenger side; a second officer suffered bruising to his face and shoulder.
The 18-year-old fled on foot to Rogers Avenue and Union Street, resisted arrest, and was subdued with a Taser before police recovered a Carbine 9mm gun.
The two officers had been reassigned to the neighborhood under the NYPD's July 4 violence-reduction plan after working the Sail 250 event, and the shooting came nine years after Detective Miosotis Familia was killed in her patrol vehicle.
