Summary
Virginia topped WalletHub’s mid-June ranking of all 50 states, placing third in military engagement and seventh in civic engagement.
WalletHub said the ranking used 13 indicators, from military enlistees and veterans to 2024 voter turnout and AmeriCorps participation, to measure patriotism year-round.
Virginia had nearly 1,761 active-duty military personnel per 100,000 civilians, about 103 veterans per 1,000 civilians, and a 72.9% turnout in the 2024 presidential election versus 66% nationally.
Montana ranked second, helped by 69.2% presidential turnout, the highest 2020 primary turnout, strong jury service and high volunteer rates; Vermont, Colorado and Oregon completed the top five.
Arkansas ranked last, behind New York, Louisiana and Alabama, while the survey said the 19 states won by Kamala Harris in 2024 averaged higher patriotism scores than the 31 won by Donald Trump.
