Summary
O'Hare and Midway were under a ground stop Friday, with nearly 100 flights canceled at O'Hare and delays at both airports running about 40 minutes.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch covering the entire Chicago area until 7 p.m. drove the disruption, with forecasters warning some storms could bring damaging winds and flooding under a Level 2 severe-weather risk.
Storms could continue on and off through Friday night into Saturday morning, while July 4 is expected to bring possible morning storms, a drier midday window and another higher storm chance later in the afternoon and evening.
Thursday night's storms had already caused damage across the area, toppling trees and disrupting the CTA Yellow Line, where passengers had to be rescued.
