The main obstacle is not display quality but manufacturing: MicroLED remains too expensive because making millions of microscopic LEDs work perfectly on a single panel is still extremely hard at scale. Unlike OLED, MicroLED requires the precise mass transfer of vast numbers of tiny red, green and blue emitters onto a backplane. Even a very small error rate can leave visible dead pixels, so manufacturers must add costly inspection, sorting, testing and repair steps. That pushes down yield and raises the price of every usable panel. This is why MicroLED is still largely confined to premium large-format screens and niche applications, even as the broader display module market grows on demand for OLED, AMOLED, Mini-LED and MicroLED. The searched material points to the same bottleneck repeatedly: mass transfer, defect control and repair are the yield-limiting steps that prevent affordable mass production. By contrast, OLED already has a mature supply chain, better yields and far larger production volumes, especially in Asia-Pacific, where companies such as Samsung Display, LG Display and BOE dominate advanced display manufacturing. MicroLED may eventually gain ground because it offers higher brightness, efficiency and durability, but for everyday phones, tablets and laptops, the industry still has not solved the cost of producing it reliably at consumer scale.
