Q: When is replacing your phone’s battery a smarter move than buying a completely new device?

Replacing the battery is the smarter move when the battery is the main problem and the phone is still good enough in every other important way. That usually means the device still runs your apps smoothly, the screen and camera are fine, and it is still receiving security and software updates. In that situation, a battery swap can restore day-to-day usability for far less money than a new phone and can add another year or two of life. That is especially true because battery wear commonly becomes noticeable after two to three years, while the rest of the hardware can often remain usable for four to five years. The upgrade advice in the Android Authority piece helps show the dividing line. Phones such as the Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Galaxy S22 Ultra, and Razr Plus (2023) are not just suffering from weaker batteries; they also have broader issues such as overheating chips, dated displays, modem problems, slower performance, or software support nearing its end. In those cases, replacing the battery alone would not solve the bigger problem, so upgrading makes more sense. By contrast, if your phone resembles the Moto G Power (2024) example—still adequate for basic tasks and not meaningfully outclassed by the newer model—keeping it longer is reasonable. If battery life is the only real complaint, replacing the battery is often the best-value option. It is also the more sustainable choice, reducing e-waste and avoiding the much higher cost of a full replacement.

Five older Android models made Android Authority’s 2026 upgrade list: Google’s Pixel 7 Pro and 7a, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra and A54, and Motorola’s Razr Plus (2023).
The common case for replacing them was familiar hardware fatigue—overheating chipsets, weaker battery life, dated displays or modems, and, for the S22 Ultra, software support nearing its end.
Google’s newer Pixel 10 line was pitched as the clearest jump, with cooler Tensor chips, better battery life, brighter Actua displays and modem fixes aimed at problems seen on the Pixel 7 generation.
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra and A57 were highlighted for longer support, stronger battery life and more premium hardware, while Motorola’s newer Razr models were cited for bigger cover screens and improved durability.
One phone was effectively exempt: the $130 Moto G Power (2024), which the article said still offers enough value that Motorola’s $400 2026 version is not a compelling upgrade.
