Summary
West Nile-positive mosquitoes were newly found this week in Westminster and Costa Mesa, bringing the Orange County total to 10 cities ahead of the holiday weekend.
Brian Brannon of the county vector control district said mosquito abundance is running far above the five-year average, with infected pools logged four times in Buena Park, five in Fullerton and twice in Santa Ana.
Orange County has not started truck spraying, and officials said no human cases have been reported this year despite the wider spread in mosquito traps.
Last year, the agency found 186 infected mosquito pools and recorded four human infections, while this season residents are being urged to use repellent, fix screens, run fans and dump standing water weekly.
