Summary
Around 9:24 p.m. on June 28, Officer Jesse Kennedy was left alone in a Dorchester street takeover as a crowd threw drinks, bottles and debris while a dirt bike rider broke free and fled.
Police said Kennedy had responded to a loud disturbance near Old Road and Ellington Street, where loud music, drinking, lowriders, mopeds and dirt bikes had drawn 100 to 150 people.
Viral video shows Kennedy struggling with the rider after grabbing the bike's handlebars to check registration; glass can be heard shattering before additional officers arrived and cleared the area.
No arrests from the crowd were noted in the police report, and the rider was not publicly identified.
The police union said the episode exposed a staffing crisis, claiming Boston patrol ranks are about 600 officers short and faulting the City Council's handling of overtime rather than Mayor Michelle Wu.
