To get Apple’s strongest protection for Messages, users give up some convenience: Apple can no longer recover their encrypted data for them, web access to protected iCloud data is largely turned off by default, and some extra verification steps may be required. The key tradeoff comes with Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, which extends end-to-end encryption to backups that can include Messages. Once it is enabled, Apple does not hold the keys needed to restore that data. That means users must manage their own recovery through a recovery contact or a 28-character recovery key. If they lose access to both, Apple cannot help them get their messages and other protected data back. Another everyday loss is easy browser access. Advanced Data Protection disables access by default to protected iCloud data on iCloud.com, so users cannot simply log in from any web browser and view that information unless they temporarily authorize access from a trusted Apple device. For people who also turn on Contact Key Verification, there is an added usability cost: they must manually verify that sensitive iMessage conversations are really with the intended person. That extra step is designed for higher-risk users such as journalists, activists, and executives, but it is less seamless than standard messaging. Some sharing features also become less straightforward, because certain collaboration and link-sharing tools do not support Apple’s highest end-to-end protection in the same way.
