Summary
42-year-old Joe Lauzon said the UFC cleared him to fight for BKFC on Aug. 29 after he learned he was still under contract despite not competing since 2019.
A call with UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell secured the signoff after Lauzon explained the move was about fighting at Fenway Park, not money, and the promotion even offered help if finances were the issue.
Fenway Park — hosting BKFC's first event there — was the decisive draw for the Massachusetts native, who said the historic venue changed his initial lack of interest in bare-knuckle fighting.
Lauzon also pushed back on the idea that he was coming out of retirement, saying he never retired after his 2019 UFC win and had already prepared twice for a canceled 2022 bout with Donald Cerrone.
The Aug. 29 card extends BKFC's push into marquee venues after the promotion announced the first-of-its-kind Fenway event this week.
