Summary
New York City launched a citywide heat emergency response ahead of a five-day hot spell starting Wednesday, with officials warning conditions could produce the second hottest day in more than a decade.
Heat index values are forecast to reach 105 to 110 on Thursday and Friday, and an excessive or extreme heat watch now runs from Wednesday through Saturday.
Hundreds of cooling centers and other cool options are being activated across all five boroughs, while agencies step up outreach to older adults, homeless people and other vulnerable residents.
Code Red teams from the Department of Homeless Services will operate from noon to 8 p.m. on heat advisory days, and city beaches and pools will stay open daily, with larger pools extended to 8 p.m.
