Summary
€24,600 is the median net wealth for euro-area residents aged 16 to 34—just 18% of the overall median of €140,100—according to the ECB's latest household finance survey.
€257,500 in Malta and €5,700 in Finland mark the extremes, with Luxembourg at €135,000 and Belgium near €97,200; among the four biggest EU economies, Italy leads at €53,500 while Germany trails at €17,600.
High youth wealth does not track wages neatly: Croatia, Slovakia, Estonia, Czechia and Lithuania all post relatively strong wealth figures despite below-EU-average earnings.
Family support, early home ownership, access to mortgage credit and inherited assets help explain the gaps, while high rents, expensive housing and living costs leave many young adults with only modest savings.
Fabian Pfeffer said early wealth is often less an individual saving story than a family and institutional one, with inequality reproduced well before later-life inheritances.
