Summary
2,291,982 people were registered as unemployed in June, down 28,739 from May and below 2.3 million for the first time since January 2008.
22.47 million Social Security contributors were recorded on average, up 128,533 on the month and 600,595 on the year, with seasonally adjusted membership also at a record above 22.2 million.
Services drove almost all of the unemployment drop with 28,498 fewer jobseekers as the tourist season began, while retail, hospitality and administrative services led monthly hiring.
159,800 young people were unemployed — the lowest on record for that group — while female unemployment fell below 1.4 million for the first time since August 2008 and female contributors reached 10.6 million.
3.45 million foreign workers and 3.47 million self-employed were contributing to the system, as ministers also credited worker regularization for bringing previously uncounted jobs into official records.
