Ian Treger, 29, has been missing in Peru since May 13, with search efforts intensifying after his mother traveled there and police finally issued an alert on June 11.
Michelle Ludwig said she notified Peruvian authorities around May 26 after Treger failed to complete a planned hike near Choquequirao by about May 20, but she found no active search was underway.
Friends told Ludwig Treger may have switched plans and headed to Ausangate Mountain instead, complicating efforts in the Andes where cell service is unreliable.
Peru’s High Mountain Rescue Police, its Missing Persons Division and the U.S. Embassy in Lima are now involved, while Ludwig has also hired private guides to keep searching.
Treger, an Eagle Scout and 2020 Washington and Lee graduate who had been teaching English in South America, had traveled from Ecuador to Peru for Cusco’s Jubilee Month and Andean hiking.
