Funerals for 14 children aged up to 14 were held across Lahore on Wednesday after a tutoring center roof collapsed a day earlier; eight other children remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Police arrested two people, including the building owner, after preliminary findings pointed to negligence during ongoing construction and poor work on an unfinished second-floor roof.
Residents said classes were being held in an aging, unsafe building despite construction, and neighbors began digging children from the rubble before rescuers arrived.
Anger spread through Kahna, on Lahore’s outskirts, as grieving families demanded punishment in a country where deadly building collapses are common because safety rules are often poorly enforced.
