Xbox Details Positron Disc-to-Digital Plan for Xbox One Games as PlayStation Exits Discs in 2028

Summary
The Verge reported Positron would let players install an Xbox disc once and receive full digital ownership rights on their Microsoft account, without visiting a retailer or using a middleman.
That entitlement would extend to Xbox Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere devices such as the Xbox Ally X, and would be revoked only if the disc is sold or transferred to another Microsoft account holder.
Microsoft’s reported system works only with Xbox One discs and newer media; some older Xbox One discs may lack required features, leaving Xbox 360 disc owners outside the program.
The feature sharpens Xbox’s pitch for a possible disc-free Helix console, as Sony has already said PlayStation will end disc support from 2028 and the PlayStation 6 will ship without discs.
As Xbox digitizes discs, are gamers gaining convenience or losing the right to truly own their games?
Facing a financial crisis, is Xbox's disc-to-digital plan a clever pivot or a sign of desperation under new leadership?

Overview
Microsoft is leading the gaming industry into an all-digital future with Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console. Announced by Xbox boss Asha Sharma in early 2026, Project Helix is designed as a hybrid console-PC system that will support both Xbox and PC games, including titles from platforms like Steam and GOG. Featuring a custom AMD SoC, the console aims to deliver top performance. Developer units are expected in early 2027, with a consumer launch rumored for 2028. This bold move highlights Microsoft's commitment to digital gaming and reflects the industry's shift away from physical media.
