Q: As .NET 11's AI features emerge, is the mandatory upgrade to .NET 10 already obsolete?

No. For organizations on .NET 8 or .NET 9, moving to .NET 10 is still the practical and supported path, not an obsolete detour. The key issue is timing and support. Microsoft will end servicing, security fixes and technical support for .NET 8 and .NET 9 on November 10, 2026. .NET 10 is the current long-term support release, backed through November 2028, so it is the only stable option that clearly extends support beyond that deadline. By contrast, .NET 11 is still on track for release in November 2026, meaning it will arrive at roughly the same time .NET 8 and .NET 9 lose support. That makes .NET 11 a poor basis for today’s migration planning. Even if its preview builds already show Microsoft’s “AI era” direction — including BFloat16 support, EF Core vector search and other AI-adjacent improvements — preview software is not a production substitute for an LTS platform. Enterprises typically need a supported, tested target now, especially where compliance, vendor support and third-party library compatibility matter. A more realistic view is that .NET 10 is the bridge and .NET 11 may become the next optional step. Teams that need immediate continuity should upgrade to .NET 10, then evaluate .NET 11 after its production release if its new features justify another move. For most production estates, the question is not .NET 10 or .NET 11 today; it is unsupported software versus a supported LTS release.

November 10, 2026 is the cutoff when Microsoft will stop servicing updates, security fixes and technical support for .NET 8 and .NET 9.
Microsoft is urging users to move to .NET 10, its long-term support release, which remains supported through November 2028 and can be adopted by switching projects to the net10.0 target framework.
Applications built on .NET 8 or .NET 9 will still run after support ends, but unpatched vulnerabilities will remain and Microsoft support will no longer be available.
Visual Studio 2022 will also begin marking .NET 8 and .NET 9 components as out of support in a future servicing update, while the production release of .NET 11 is expected this November.
