Euro Area Inflation Slows to 2.8% in June as Energy Prices Ease

Yes. June’s drop to 2.8% looks more like a pause than a clean end to the euro area’s inflation problem. The immediate relief is real: Eurostat’s flash estimate shows slower price growth across energy, services and food, and core inflation also eased to 2.4% from 2.6%. That matters because it suggests the latest spike has not yet fully spread into a broad wage-price spiral. Wage growth has cooled and labor markets are softer than during the 2022 inflation shock. But the broader outlook still points to renewed pressure later this year. ECB staff projections in June see headline inflation averaging 3.0% in 2026, above target, and peaking around 3.4% in the third and fourth quarters. The main reason is energy: the Middle East war and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz have already pushed up oil and gas prices, and policymakers say medium-term energy costs remain elevated even after some short-term easing. That is why the ECB raised rates in June and why markets expect further tightening. Officials are worried that higher energy costs could gradually feed into transport, food, goods and services, even if second-round effects remain limited for now. So the key issue is persistence. Under the baseline, June is a temporary reprieve before inflation rises again, then eases in 2027. Under a worse energy scenario, the rebound could be stronger and longer-lasting. Much depends on whether the energy shock fades or deepens.

Euro area annual inflation is estimated at 2.8% in June, down from 3.2% in May in Eurostat’s flash reading.
Energy still posted the fastest price growth at 8.7%, but that was down from 10.8% in May; services inflation also eased to 3.2% from 3.5%.
Food, alcohol and tobacco slowed to 1.6% from 1.9%, while non-energy industrial goods held steady at 0.9%.
Eurostat said the full June HICP dataset will be released on July 17, with the euro-area aggregate now reflecting Bulgaria’s entry from EA20 to EA21 in 2026.
