18-Month-Old Boy Dies in Car Outside Florida Daycare After Missed Drop-Off

Plantation police said an 18-month-old boy was found dead in a vehicle outside A World of Discovery Academy at about 5:39 p.m. Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The daycare's owner told the South Florida Sun Sentinel the boy's father was supposed to drop him off that morning, forgot the child was still in the car, drove to work, then returned believing his son was already inside.
Staff did not quickly flag the absence because the family had already said the boy's older sibling would not attend that day, and the center's practice is to contact families about unexplained absences by week's end.
Police have not released the child's identity and said detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the death.
