Michael Byrne, the British actor known for roles in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” “Braveheart” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” died on June 20 at 82.
No cause of death has been disclosed. Byrne played the older Gellert Grindelwald in the 2010 “Harry Potter” film, years before Johnny Depp took on the character in “Fantastic Beasts.”
Over seven decades, Byrne built more than 170 screen credits, including “Gangs of New York,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and a string of 1970s World War II films such as “A Bridge Too Far.”
London-born Byrne began on stage with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company and moved into television and film in the 1960s, making his movie debut in 1963’s “The Scarlet Blade.”
He is survived by ex-wife Carole Nimmons, daughters Tara and Bryony, and grandchildren Tom, Chloe and Jasmine.
