Summary
BMW said the fifth-generation X5 will enter production in August 2026 at Spartanburg, offering petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and later hydrogen variants within one model line.
The new iX5 arrives in December as Spartanburg’s first fully electric vehicle, using an 800-volt system and Gen6 cells to deliver a provisional 645-845 km WLTP range and 460 kW charging.
Plug-in hybrid versions offer up to 102 km of electric range, while petrol and diesel models retain 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance for customers needing longer range and quick refueling.
BMW said the later iX5 Hydrogen will target up to 750 km of range, making the X5 its first series fuel-cell model from a global premium manufacturer.
The launch underscores BMW’s technology-open strategy as rivals scale back some EV plans, while the company highlights lower lifecycle emissions and renewable-powered production in South Carolina.
