Summary
11:45 p.m. Monday, a westbound coach bus near the Greenpoint Avenue exit crashed on the Long Island Expressway in Queens, killing the driver and a male passenger and injuring 20 people, three critically.
Police said the bus slammed into one vehicle, pushing it into another car before the coach flipped over the central median into oncoming traffic and hit two more vehicles.
More than 70 fire and EMS workers responded as the crash shut the highway in both directions, leaving traffic at a standstill and forcing some stranded drivers to reverse out through an on-ramp.
The road reopened at 50th Street just after 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, though emergency officials warned drivers to expect lingering delays.
