Summary
Shortly before midnight Monday, a westbound coach bus flipped over the median into eastbound traffic on the Long Island Expressway in Queens, killing the driver and one passenger and sending 20 people to hospitals.
Police said the bus first collided with a vehicle near Exit 16 at Greenpoint Avenue, then struck four more vehicles before overturning; the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Three of the injured were in critical condition, and 79 fire and emergency personnel were still working the scene overnight.
By 5 a.m. Tuesday, authorities had closed both directions at 50th Street, diverted Queens-bound traffic and warned of major delays.
