West Nile Virus Detected in 6 Davis County Cities as Mosquito Season Intensifies

Six Davis County cities — Syracuse, West Bountiful, Sunset, Woods Cross, Centerville and North Salt Lake — had mosquito pools test positive for West Nile virus, the local abatement district said Monday.
The district tracks Culex pipiens and Culex tarsalis in trap-collected pools, saying Davis County’s landscape creates prime mosquito-bird habitat that raises the chance mosquitoes acquire the virus.
West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been found in Davis County since 2004, and last year they were detected in every county city except South Weber.
Health officials urged residents to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, avoid exposure at night and dump standing water; the CDC says symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, and no licensed vaccine is available.
