Summary
Connecticut’s second measles case of 2026 was confirmed in a Hartford County adult who had received two MMR doses and is recovering at home with cough, fever and rash.
Two weeks after exposure to the state’s first case, the vaccinated patient tested low-level positive, which Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani said reflects milder illness and limited virus shedding.
The first patient was unvaccinated and had traveled internationally before developing symptoms, a chain doctors said made a second case unsurprising given measles’ extreme contagiousness.
95% to 97% vaccine effectiveness still allows rare breakthrough infections, but doctors said vaccination sharply reduces severity and the risk of hospitalization or ICU care.
More than 2,100 measles cases have been reported nationwide in 2026, and Connecticut’s two cases already equal the state’s total from the previous five years combined.
