SSI is a subsistence benefit for people with very limited income and resources, and the average monthly payment is well below the federal maximum. If a household treats the second July deposit as a bonus and spends it before August, it can face a cash shortfall for rent, food, utilities or medicine later in the summer. The quirk can help only in a narrow sense: it gives recipients access to August’s money a day early and may offer brief flexibility for paying bills due at the start of the month. But over July and August combined, the total benefit does not increase at all. The practical answer is that the payment shift is manageable only if households mentally separate the July 31 deposit and hold it for August expenses. The SSA’s payment calendar and direct-deposit records can help beneficiaries track that timing and avoid confusion.
