EIA data for the week ending June 19 show U.S. commercial crude inventories down 6.1 million barrels and about 7% below the five-year average. Gasoline inventories rose 2.1 million barrels, yet still sit 5% below normal for this time of year. Distillates are also below average. That means the recent pump-price decline is happening even as fuel buffers remain thin. The bigger risk is not that a surge is certain this week, but that the market is unusually vulnerable to any new disruption. Refining capacity has been structurally reduced since 2019, utilization is already near seasonal highs, and global supply remains sensitive to refinery outages and any renewed trouble around the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that if geopolitical tensions flare again or crude draws continue, oil and gasoline could rise sharply. So the evidence points to a fragile pause: short-term prices may keep easing, but low inventories and limited spare capacity leave little room for error heading into the holiday travel period.
